Your baby needs “good bacteria”?

Probiotics are strains of ‘good’ bacteria, which can help to support bacterial balance in the gut by increasing the numbers of beneficial bacteria. The most common and well-known probiotic strains are lactobacillus, acidophilus and bifidobacteria.

During Pregnancy

As your baby develops throughout pregnancy, low numbers of foetal and placental bacteria from the mother have been detected and this is considered to be part of the preparation of the baby’s immune system for the outside world.

In addition, during the last trimester (3 months) of pregnancy, the mother’s intestinal bacteria are transferred to breast tissue in preparation for breast milk production. This ‘mammary microbiota’ development peaks just prior to birth and remains at relatively constant levels throughout breastfeeding.

Supporting the mother’s gut bacteria during pregnancy may be beneficial for both of these processes.



Development of the infant’s gut microbiota starts immediately as the baby is born – at birth, the GI tract of healthy newborn babies is considered to be sterile and the baby acquires his or her gut bacteria from the environment it is born into.

For babies born vaginally, the first colonisation is from their mother’s vaginal, skin and rectal microflora. For infants born via caesarean section (C- section), these bacteria come from skin and the hospital environment.

Thus, the gut bacteria of babies born via C-section is significantly different to that of infants born vaginally and this difference is increasingly being shown to have an impact on health and immunity throughout life.



The development of the baby’s microbiome is also influenced by diet.

A few hours after birth the beneficial bacteria start to colonise in the infant’s gut, helping to reinforce the gut barrier and support immunity.


Breast fed

Breast milk provides the baby with the mother’s microflora and prebiotic oligosaccharides, fibres which feed the microflora and help them colonise.

During the last trimester of pregnancy, the mother’s intestinal bacteria are transferred to breast tissue in preparation for breast milk production and the ‘mammary microbiota’ levels remain relatively constant throughout breastfeeding.

The composition of breast milk also reflects the mother’s health and diet. Providing both mother and baby with a probiotic supplement during breastfeeding may help to optimise the bacterial colonisation of the infant's GI tract.


Formula fed

If the infant is formula fed, he or she will not receive the ‘mammary microbiota’ and will be dependent solely on formula milk for nutrition until weaning begins around 6 months of age.

Supplementing with research-backed probiotic bacteria and prebiotic fibres may support colonisation of the baby’s GI tract with beneficial bacteria and help to ensure a balanced microbiota.



The World Health Organisation recommends that babies are exclusively breast fed for the first six months of life, after which they are slowly weaned onto solid foods to meet their increased energy and nutrient needs.

Whilst foods such as fruits, vegetables and plain yoghurt can help to provide some prebiotics and probiotics, continuing to supplement probiotics will also help to support the development of the infant microbiome during weaning.

How are ProVen Probiotics different?

ProVen Probiotics contain the unique Lab4 probiotic strains. This group of strains is one of the very few probiotic cultures that have been rigourously studied over the past 15 years to demonstrate consistent health benefits ranging from allergy prevention in infants to reduction of all symptoms (bloating, pain, discomfort) in people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Other studies conducted at Addenbrooke’s hospital in Cambridge have shown that Lab4 can reduce the levels of ‘bad bacteria’ following antibiotic treatment, as well as reducing the incidence of diarrhoea caused by the ‘superbug’ Clostridium difficile.

My child is formula fed, but is allergic to dairy - can I give him the ProVen Probiotics for Breast Fed Babies?

Yes – it’s fine to give your baby the ProVen Probiotics for Breast Fed babies.

The only difference between the two products is that ProVen Probiotics for Formula Fed babies has added prebiotics, which are naturally present in breast milk and help the probiotic bacteria to colonise the intestine. The number of live bacteria in both products is the same – 10 billion per serving, as used in the Swansea Baby Trial.

The ProVen Formula Fed product contains two types of prebiotic fibre, GOS (galactooligosaccharides) and FOS (fructooligosaccharides). GOS is derived from the lactose in milk and, although it is unlikely to contain any lactose and does not contain any milk protein, it is derived from milk. FOS is derived from fruit and vegetables.

What is the source of the DHA in Pregnancy Plus?

ProVen Probiotics Pregnancy Plus contains an additional fish oil capsule to provide the omega 3 fatty acid DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) to support mum and baby in pregnancy.

The omega 3 fish oil in ProVen Pregnancy Plus is derived from tuna and is a highly purified stable fish oil that meets all the requirements of Regulation 1881-2006, which clearly sets the standards in relation to mercury and other heavy metals, PCB’s, Dioxins, Furans and PAHs.
