Public Health England Recommends Vitamin D This Summer

With lockdown still in full effect in the UK, Public Health England (PHE) last week announced a recommendation for people to consider taking daily vitamin D supplements throughout the spring and summer as the coronavirus lockdown continues.

Having previously recommended only ‘at-risk’ groups to supplement daily, PHE is now advising the entire population to supplement with vitamin D. A statement from the NHS website reads;

“Consider taking 10 micrograms of vitamin D a day to keep your bones and muscles healthy. This is because you may not be getting enough vitamin D from sunlight if you’re indoors most of the day.”

However, they do stress that this recommendation is not due to any evidence that vitamin D may be linked to reductions in coronavirus infection.

“There have been some news reports about vitamin D reducing the risk of coronavirus. However, there is no evidence that this is the case.”

We have written before about the far-reaching benefits of vitamin D supplementation, and recently interviewed Dr Daniel Owens who is actively researching the role of vitamin D in muscle function.
